Residents of RW 08 Tanah Sereal Intensify Waste Sorting at Home

Residents of the densely populated RW 08, Tanah Sereal Urban Village, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, have stepped up waste sorting at home. Of the 320 homes spread across nine neighborhood units (RT), approximately 85 percent have sorted their waste.

Amir Hamzah Lubis, head of RW 08 in Tanah Sereal Urban Village, stated that the waste sorting initiative has been implemented in residential areas since last March. The initiative has become more widespread following the issuance of Jakarta Governor's Instruction No. 5 of 2026.

"From the data collection results, of the 320 houses, around 85 percent have been involved in sorting waste," he said, Tuesday (6/30).

According to Amir, the urban village and district offices have been actively providing socialization and assistance, as well as facilitating supporting infrastructure for waste sorting for their residents.

"The density of residential buildings and waste disposal locations are still a problem. Therefore, we provide sorted garbage bags for residents," he added.

He continued that residents' inorganic waste such as plastic bottles is distributed through waste banks and organic waste is processed into compost and eco enzymes.

"We've also created three biopore holes to collect organic waste from residents' cooking. Furthermore, the urban village rank is currently constructing four more waste storage holes on the banks of the Cagak River," he continued.

Head of Tanah Sereal Urban Village, Tubagus Masrul Iman, appreciated the residents of RW 08 for their massive waste sorting initiative. He hopes this initiative will expand and motivate other RW residents to do the same.

"We hope this movement can contribute to solving the waste problem in Jakarta so that in the future only the residue will be disposed of at the Bantar Gebang landfil," he hoped.
